Summary, etc. The victory of the French troops under the command of General Kléber over the Turkish army of Grand Vizier Yusuf Pasha at the Battle of Heliopolis on 20 March 1800, was the greatest triumph of the French army during the Egyptian campaign of 1798–1801. Yet it is the least-studied battle of that campaign and has been practically forgotten in French historical memory. The author of the article analyses the reasons for this situation and presents the most detailed reconstruction of the Battle of Heliopolis thus far, based on documents held in the French military archives in Vincennes and on memoirs of participants in the battle.
