| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | The thought of the School of Salamanca and especially of Francisco de Vitoria (1483-1546) and Bartolomé de las Casas (1484-1566) represented an important advance for the recognition of the rights of the inhabitants of the New World. Although it was not without ambiguities and evolved from some authors to others, its contribution was more systematic than any of those existing until then and, during its validity (1526-1617), it contributed to refute some of the ideas most used to justify the discrimination and subjugation of the Indians. However, this contribution does not correspond to that of the secular and liberal human rights that were to be claimed from the end of the eighteenth century. Ignoring this difference implies not only denaturalizing what these rights imply, but also falling into an exercise of anachronism, in which the effort of the authors of the School is displaced and defocused, without what is attributed to them being considered better than what they actually defended. |
