Summary, etc. | Dr. Richelmi, the chief medical officer at Glogau (today’s Głogów, a city that straddles the Oder River), wrote three reports describing the health situation in a fortress blockaded by enemy troops from February to April 1813. These scientific reports outline the medical organisation of the fortress, before going on at length to describe the clinical practices that prevailed there. The patients, mostly survivors from Russia, suffered mainly from fevers. Richelmi analyses their symptoms, describes the medicines used and the treatments adopted, and provides figures for the results in terms of failures (deaths) and successes (recoveries and convalescences). He also sets out his own medical theories. The reports are a source of remarkable historical interest, offering a range of information generally overlooked in the memoirs and recollections of medical officers of the time. |
