| Summary, etc. | La pratique du pavoisement n’a guère été interrogée au cœur de l’histoire des mobilisations politiques. Cet article qui porte sur la béatification de Jeanne d’Arc dans le Paris de 1909 l’aborde comme une acclamation visuelle, une forme alternative de mise en scène qui, sous prétexte de lever l’étendard du Peuple, permet aux milieux de la droite monarchiste et catholique de s’opposer à la loi de 1905 sur la séparation des Églises et de l’État. Disqualifier la définition nouvelle de l’espace public : tel était l’enjeu de cet appel au drapeau censé donner naissance à une fête nationale concurrente du 14 juillet. Il faut y voir une prétention à la visibilité publique dressée contre la République du Bloc des gauches et contre la confessionnalisation du catholicisme. Pour dégager les ressorts de cette manifestation, on questionne ici le modèle de représentation dont le pavoisement se revendique ( vox populi, vox dei), puis les dispositifs d’encadrement et de mise en scène qui contribuent à fixer sa signification, enfin on mesure l’étendue de son emprise sociale et spatiale – une façon de savoir à quel degré cette représentation du peuple parisien peut incarner le thème d’une démocratie hostile à la laïcité et aux élections. |

| Summary, etc. | This article reassesses flag bunting as a research object for the historical sociology of mobilizations. Taking the case of the beatification of Joan of Arc in 1909, it develops the concept of “visual acclamation”. Bunting a flag can be understood as a visual acclamation in the sense that it makes a political inclination visible in the public sphere. The Catholic monarchists from the right used this technique to display their fierce opposition to the law separating church and state passed in 1905. They attempted to create an alternate national holiday, distinct from the 14th of July that made the pride of the left coalition. For them, Catholicism was not to be confined to the church; it should be expressed as a popular and national feeling. A parallel was drawn between the vox populi and the vox dei. Bunting meant demonstrating a conservative patriotism, visually made self-evident and socially controlled at the neighborhood level. The Catholics fought for their version of popular democracy, a democracy that was not driven by elections. They did it by virtually replacing ballots with little flags, investing the street with the colors of the old France that was not willing to fade away. |
