Summary, etc. | The Napoleonic period should be seen as an era of acculturation for French soldiers in terms of the general transmission of knowledge (or the interaction of technicity and knowledge) in the field of intelligence gathering. How was intelligence gathered and what was concomitant culture of intelligence gathering? Operational military intelligence within Napoleonic armies came from two sources, namely, the Génie (the engineers) and Geographer Engineers, and the infantry and cavalry, via practices developed throughout the 18th century. The state of almost permanent warfare throughout the Empire period caused the crystalisation of customs, practices and knowledge in this domain, as can be seen from the normalisation and standardisation of the documents produced by intelligence officers in their duties. And beyond operational intelligence gathering, imperial soldiers also engaged in certain practices more related to police intelligence gathering. Here it was a question of surveillance of the populace and public opinion, both within and outside the departments of the Empire. The work done at headquarters level acculturated officers in the different facets of intelligence gathering and the normalisation of those facets. |
