Histoire et géologie partagent une même logique d’enquête visant à reconstituer le passé à partir de traces, tout en présentant des différences épistémologiques : les sources historiques sont discursives et intentionnelles, tandis que les traces géologiques sont matérielles et muettes. Ces divergences structurent des registres explicatifs distincts (configurations historiographiques en histoire, paradigmes en sciences de la Terre).
