| Summary, etc. | Cette note revient sur l’itinéraire intellectuel du défunt historien Jean Meyer (1924-2022). « Malgré-nous » alsacien, agrégé d’histoire en 1952 et nommé à Nantes, il consacre sa thèse à la noblesse bretonne du xviiie siècle qu’il entend au sens large, est élu professeur à Rennes en 1966, puis à Paris-IV Sorbonne en 1980. Sa carrière a deux temps, l’un consacré à la Bretagne, l’autre, la période parisienne, à des perspectives plus larges. L’ensemble de son œuvre, d’une variété extrême, se distingue par son ampleur de vue, envisageant le point de vue de l’État et celui de la province à la lumière d’une bibliographie internationale et de comparaisons européennes, et tout cela dans une souveraine indifférence aux modes historiographiques. |

| Summary, etc. | This paper deals with the intellectual itinerary of the late Alsatian historian Jean Meyer (1924-2022). One of the “Malgré-nous,” agrégé in history in 1952, and posted to teach in Nantes, Meyer devoted his thesis to the Breton nobility, which he understood in a broad sense, of the eighteenth century. He obtained a university teaching post at Rennes in 1966, then at Paris-IV Sorbonne in 1980. His career has two stages, one devoted to Brittany, the other, the Parisian period, with its broader perspectives. Indeed, his very varied body of work is distinguished by its breadth of view: encompassing the point of view of the state and that of the province, and illuminated by an international bibliography and European comparisons; all this accompanied by a sovereign indifference to historiographical fashions. |
