Summary, etc. In the wake of 9/11, the NYPD started to build its own intelligence agency to respond efficiently to possible terrorist threats. To do so, it implemented a broad Muslim surveillance program. Once it was revealed to the public, Muslims leaders and communities largely condemned this program, which they considered to be discriminatory and liberticidal. Distrust spread and damaged the relations between the NYPD and Muslims communities, which could prove to be problematic in the future.
