Summary, etc. | After having defined the concept of mental health the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) has defined a concept of sexual health. In clinical sexology it seems important to have a distinct model of sexual health in order to face the difficulties of our patients. A precise sexual evaluation based on a model of sexual health is necessary to elaborate useful therapeutic strategies.Since patients with psychological problems often suffer also in their sexual life, this distinction is indeed quite useful for psychiatrists, psychologists and other health professionals. Obviously certain psychotropic treatments can produce sexual problems since the side effects may alter sexual desire, sexual excitation and even orgastic capacity. Moreover it has been proved that certain sexual problems affect the mental health of the patient. In such a case, it is not sufficient for the health professional to treat the psychological or psychiatric problem, which is the symptom of it, but also to intervene directly at the level of the causality that is the sexual dysfunction. This article aims at giving a sexual health model. It is in fact the first complete description of the model on which the Sexocorporel Approach is based, and sensitizing health professionals in the care, not only of mental health, but also of sexual health in order to provide a more thorough response to their patients’ needs. |
