Summary, etc. "Contemporary philosophical research holds the expression “Christian philosophy” at a distance arguing its lack of respect for freedom of thought. Evidently, Christianity has nonetheless played a great role in the history of philosophy. The concept of “Christian philosophy” was defined by the encyclical letter Fides et Ratio in a manner somehow similar to the description made by Kant in Religion: one cannot limit philosophical thought to the realm of pure science; there is a reason beyond science, a realm of ?meaning’ addressed by Christian thought. Contemporary culture generally approaches meaning via Heidegger’s history of being, the simultaneous advent and eclipse of the self. Italian philosophers as S. Natoli or G. Vattimo view Christianity as a central element to this history and offer a postmodern and stoical philosophy of Christianity. French authors rather utilize Kant’s idea of a Christian model enabling philosophy to reflect on causes beyond the specific realm of the discipline. It does by no means follow that J.-L. Marion and M. Henry seek to deploy a specifically “Christian” philosophy."
