| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | In 1928, Marcel Aubert pioneered the teaching of medieval French art in the United States and, in 1931, he attracted Henri Focillon to the New World, who went on to become the leading organiser of medieval art teaching at Yale University. Subsequently, the two French scholars, at the request of Walter W. S. Cook, the renowned medieval art historian and Hispanist, gave a series of lectures in French at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York during the 1935-1936 academic year. But H. Focillon, during his stay in America, had a national mission, more or less clandestine or semi-official, which he carried out under the guise of teaching and explaining medieval art when he visited universities and colleges to give lectures. During his stay in America, H. Focillon often helped colleagues, students and researchers fighting for Free France. In light of previously unpublished documents, the cases of Claude Schaefer and Henri Stern are discussed here. In the appendix to this study, I publish two personal letters from H. Focillon to his accomplice in the American adventure, M. Aubert, and to his replacement at the Sorbonne, Louis Réau. |
