| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | This contribution outlines the approach and main findings of a research in SIC about the links between caregivers’ affective manifestations and the limits of information-communication devices underpinned by New Public Management (Hood, 1991; Gardère, 2012). The rollout of NPM since the 1980s has led to the proliferation of information-communication devices (Jeanneret, 2005; Grammacia, 2011) designed to rationalize public service activities (Bouillon, 2004; Ogien, 2009; Groleau and Mayère, 2009; Mayère, 2013; 2014). At the same time, caregivers continue to denounce the “gestionnarisation” (Ogien, 2009) of their work, the ongoing deterioration of their working conditions, and the resulting suffering for themselves and their patients. In this context, we focused on caregivers’ affective manifestation in the workplace as a communicational process of social performance (Martin-Juchat, 2008; Dumas, 2016; Martin-Juchat and Dumas, 2016). The aim is to understand how these affective manifestations reveal tensions between devices and work situations, and how they challenge the effectiveness of the symbolic mediation function (Floris, 1996) traditionally attributed to information-communication devices. |
