| Summary, etc. | Apparue au XVIIe siècle, la question de la résonance est aussi ancienne que celle de la communication – centrée sur l‘écoute et l’oreille, elle diffère de la seconde qui se centre sur le langage et la parole. Résonance et communication renvoient toutes deux à la question de la formation de soi et de l’éducation – thèmes travaillés par Charles Taylor dans le cadre de sa philosophie de l’identité et par Hartmut Rosa dans sa sociologie des « relations au monde ». Les questions propres à la résonance et à la communication portent également sur l’espace public démocratique et l’organisation de ses médiations – de ses médias et de ses technologies. Décuplée ou, au contraire, affaiblie par ces médiations, la résonance de l’espace public peut s’étioler jusqu’au « mutisme du monde » (Rosa). Ancré dans une critique de la modernité dont les sources remontent au romantisme, le thème de la résonance permet ainsi de pointer les formes contemporaines de l’aliénation tout en envisageant une relation au monde (et à la nature) signifiante et sensible, inséparable de la formation de sujets sociaux « réalisés » en tant que membres actifs d’une collectivité politique. La quête de résonance peut cependant engendrer l’inverse, à savoir un « sujet excentrique » (Altmeyer) soumis aux incitations des supports techniques de la « modernité numérique ». Le présent texte discute ainsi les différents apports de la théorie de la résonance à l’étude critique de la communication sociale. |

| Summary, etc. | The concept of resonance, which appeared in the 18th century, is as old as that of communication. The two differ, however, for whereas communication focuses on language and speech, resonance is about listening and hearing. Yet resonance and communication both relate to the question of shaping the Self and education—two themes addressed by Charles Taylor in his philosophy of identity, and by Hartmut Rosa in his sociology of “relations to the world”. Issues pertaining to resonance and social communication also concern the democratic public sphere and its mediations, that is, its media and technologies. Reinforced or, on the contrary, weakened by these mediations, the resonance of the public sphere can fade into the “muteness of the world” (Rosa). Rooted in a critique of modernity whose sources go back to romanticism, the theme of resonance thus makes it possible to point out contemporary forms of alienation while conceptualizing a relationship with the world (and with nature) that is significant and sensible, inseparable from the formation of “realized” social subjects as active members of a society. However, the quest for resonance can generate the opposite, namely an “eccentric self” (Altmeyer) subject to the incentives of the numerous technical media of our “digital modernity”. This article discusses the various contributions of resonance theory to the critical study of social communication. |
