Summary, etc. The invention of the dynamics as a new science closely relates to Leibniz’s writing of the Dynamica de potentia in 1689-90. A few months earlier, in the Phoranomus, Leibniz had proposed a definition of power as the quantity of effect accomplished without expense of force. This article explores manuscript formulations that led from here to a definition of formal action as measured by mvs (mass times space times speed) or mv2 in the unit of time: hence an a priori demonstration of the principles of abstract dynamics centered around the notion of absolute power. The metaphysical implications of this conceptual framework distinguish Leibniz’s dynamics from the historical mainstream of classical mechanics.

Summary, etc. L’invention de la dynamique comme nouvelle science survient lorsque Leibniz rédige la Dynamica de potentia en 1689-1690. Quelques mois plus tôt, Leibniz avait proposé, dans le Phoranomus, une définition de la puissance par la quantité d’effet accompli sans exhaustion de force. Cet article explore les formulations manuscrites qui ont mené de là à la définition de l’action formelle, mesurée par le produit mvs (masse par espace par temps) ou mv2 dans l’unité de temps : d’où la démonstration des principes de la dynamique abstraite centrés sur la notion de puissance absolue. Les implications métaphysiques de cette conceptualisation distinguent la dynamique leibnizienne du courant historique dominant de la mécanique classique.
