| Summary, etc. | The recent notion of ‘surveillance capitalism’ has become one of the main tools for theorizing digital mediations, making it possible to account for the proliferation of surveillance devices in a wide variety of forms and social contexts. The term is polysemous and can in fact cover very different theoretical models. We can identify two main strategies used to conceptualize the role of surveillance in contemporary capitalism: a weak conception of surveillance as the control of labour, and a maximalist conception of surveillance as a new form of exploitation, at odds with traditional forms of capitalism. We propose a third conception of surveillance as reproduction, by showing how, despite their apparent diversity, the spread of surveillance systems helps to reproduce political, economic and social institutions that are threatened by the crisis yet determine the functioning of capitalism. |

| Summary, etc. | La notion récente de « capitalisme de surveillance » s’est imposée comme un des principaux outils de théorisation des médiations numériques, permettant de rendre compte de la multiplication des dispositifs de surveillance sous des formes et dans des contextes sociaux très variés. L’expression, polysémique, peut en réalité recouvrir des modèles théoriques tout à fait hétérogènes. Nous pouvons identifier deux grandes stratégies conceptuelles mises en œuvre pour penser la place de la surveillance dans le capitalisme contemporain : une conception faible de la surveillance comme contrôle du travail, et une conception maximaliste de la surveillance comme nouvelle exploitation, en rupture avec les formes traditionnelles du capitalisme. Nous proposons d’élaborer une troisième conception de la surveillance comme reproduction, en montrant comment la diffusion des dispositifs de surveillance, malgré leur diversité apparente, participe à reproduire des institutions politiques, économiques et sociales menacées par la crise et qui pourtant conditionnent le fonctionnement du capitalisme. |
