| Summary, etc. | In the face of climate and ecological crises, the energy transition through renewable energy (RE) is one of the transformative levers driving organizational and institutional reconfigurations in the energy sector. From a meso-economic regulatory perspective, this article examines the capacity of participatory RE to act as “institutionalizing margins” via a “citizen-led energy transition”, in response to contemporary ecological and democratic issues. Based on a qualitative survey and statistical analysis, we show how participatory RE, despite significant constraints, sketches out an alternative mode of regulation at the margins. Through their critical function and experimentation, this institutionalizing margin benefits from partial institutional recognition, prompting certain established energy players to position themselves in relation to them via co-development projects. Theoretically, the article explores the notions of mesocritical space and institutionalizing margin to grasp transformations at the margins of centralized, extractivist energy regulation. | Summary, etc. | Face à la crise environnementale, la transition énergétique par les énergies renouvelables (EnR) fait partie des leviers de transformations, à l’origine de reconfigurations organisationnelles et institutionnelles dans le secteur de l’énergie. Suivant l’approche méso de la théorie de la régulation, cet article examine la capacité des EnR participatives à y agir comme des « marges instituantes » via une « transition énergétique citoyenne », en réponse aux enjeux écologiques et démocratiques contemporains. A partir d’une enquête qualitative et une analyse statistique, nous montrons comment les EnR participatives, bien que fortement contraintes, esquissent à la marge un mode de régulation alternatif. Par leur fonction critique et leurs expérimentations, cette marge instituante bénéficie d’une relative reconnaissance institutionnelle, poussant certains acteurs historiques de l’énergie à se positionner par rapport à eux via des projets en codéveloppement. Théoriquement, l’article explore les notions d’espace mésocritique et de marge instituante pour saisir les transformations en marge de la régulation centralisée et extractiviste de l’énergie. |
