| Summary, etc. | Rawls défend une conception égalitaire de la justice, sans invoquer un désir d’égalité car il juge peu probable que celui-ci puisse être partagé au sein d’une société. Il considère aussi que ce désir, particulièrement chez les plus pauvres, peut s’avérer déraisonnable. Cette position n’est pas incohérente : il est sans doute possible de parvenir à des résultats égalitaires à partir de motivations égoïstes. Mais elle se prive d’un ressort passionnel fondamental, sans doute parce que s’il apparaît à Rawls très probable que des institutions justes finissent par développer le sens de la justice, il n’envisage pas la formation d’une éducation publique à l’égalité qui soutiendrait l’adoption du principe de différence. |

| Summary, etc. | Rawls defends an egalitarian conception of justice without invoking a desire for equality, as he believes it is unlikely that such a desire could be widely shared within a society. Furthermore, he believes that this aspiration, particularly among the poorest, may be unrealistic. This position is not inconsistent; egalitarian results can undoubtedly be achieved based on selfish motivations. However, this approach lacks a fundamental emotional driving force. This is probably because, although Rawls believes that fair institutions will ultimately develop a sense of justice, he does not envisage the formation of a public education system based on equality that would support the adoption of the difference principle. |
