| Summary, etc. | Introduction: The off-label use of doxycycline to prevent certain sexually transmitted infections (STIs), outside controlled research environments, has been occurring for several years.Purpose of the study: The objective of this study was to describe the off-label use of doxycycline as a preventive treatment for STIs by conducting a review of the literature, including analysis of a social network.Results: In total, 11 eligible references were identified, comprising 9 letters and 2 original articles. One press article and six Reddit® discussions were also selected. Most doxycycline users identified in this study were men who have sex with men, with numerous partners and without using condoms. Doxycycline was mainly prescribed by a doctor, but some users obtain the medication in its veterinary form via the internet. HIV PrEP was identified as a factor leading to the decision to take doxycycline. While most users expressed confidence in its efficacy, some expressed reservations due to its inability to provide comprehensive protection against all STIs, and due to the occurrence of side effects.Conclusion: The increase in self-medication with doxycycline for STI prevention necessitates enhanced monitoring, addressing both disease transmission risks and potential adverse drug reactions. |

| Summary, etc. | Introduction : L’utilisation de la doxycycline pour prévenir certaines infections sexuellement transmissibles (IST), en dehors d’un environnement de recherche contrôlé, est un fait avéré depuis plusieurs années.But de l’étude : L’objectif de cette étude était de décrire l’utilisation de la doxycycline en prévention des IST hors cadre de la recherche, à travers une revue narrative de la littérature, incluant l’analyse d’un réseau social.Résultats : Au total, 11 références éligibles ont été identifiées, dont 9 lettres et 2 articles originaux. Un article de presse et six discussions Reddit® ont également été sélectionnés. La plupart des utilisateurs de doxycycline identifiés dans cette étude étaient des hommes ayant des relations sexuelles avec d’autres hommes, avec de nombreux partenaires et sans utiliser de préservatifs. La doxycycline était principalement prescrite par un médecin, mais certains utilisateurs se procuraient le médicament sous sa forme vétérinaire sur Internet. La PrEP-VIH a été identifiée comme un facteur facilitant la décision de prendre de la doxycycline. Si la plupart des utilisateurs ont exprimé leur confiance dans son efficacité, certains ont émis des réserves quant à son incapacité à fournir une protection complète contre toutes les IST et quant à l’apparition d’effets secondaires.Conclusions : L’intérêt croissant pour l’automédication avec la doxycycline dans le cadre de la prévention des IST nécessite une surveillance accrue, portant à la fois sur les risques de transmission des maladies et sur les effets indésirables potentiels des médicaments. |
