Summary, etc. Following on from Viviana Zelizer’s work on the articulation between monetary practices and social relations, this article examines the relationship between videographers and their various sources of income: monetization by the platform, donations from internet users, commercial partnerships, and public funding. Each of these sources is invested with “qualities”, in Zelizer’s sense, which are independent of the quantities of money involved. The study is based on 24 interviews with content creators offering learning and popularization videos, mainly on YouTube and Twitch. The article distinguishes three sets of videographers according to their place in the hierarchy of success: “aspirants”, “institutional videographers”, and “established youtubers”. It shows that the various forms of remuneration are both cumulative and antagonistic, and that trade-offs have to be made between them in terms of the ways in which their legitimacy and uses are presented. This rhetorical exercise appears to be particularly necessary and difficult for the most visible videographers.

Summary, etc. Dans la suite des travaux de Viviana Zelizer sur l’articulation entre pratiques monétaires et relations sociales, cet article examine le rap­port des vidéastes à leurs différentes sources de revenu : monétisa­tion par la plateforme, dons des internautes, partenariats commer­ciaux et financements publics. Chacune de ces sources est investie de « qualités », au sens de Zelizer, qui sont indépendantes des quantités d’argent en jeu. L’enquête est fondée sur 24 entretiens de créateurs de contenu proposant des vidéos d’apprentissage et de vulgarisation, principalement sur YouTube et Twitch. L’article distingue trois en­sembles de vidéastes selon leur place dans la hiérarchie du succès : les « aspirants », les « vidéastes institutionnels », et les « youtubeurs installés ». Il montre que les différentes rémunérations sont à la fois cumulatives et antagonistes, et doivent faire l’objet d’arbitrages quant à la façon de mettre en scène leur légitimité et leurs usages. Cet exercice rhétorique apparaît particulièrement nécessaire et diffi­cile pour les vidéastes les plus visibles.
