Summary, etc. Late affected by religious conflicts, Lower Limousin was drawn into war from 1575. Denominational and political oppositions exploited by the local nobility transformed the country’s landscape over a period of about twenty years. Villagers and lords carried out a spatial militarization. This territory protection culminated in negotiations between the sides. The recruitment or payment of captains at the level of villages as well as lordships obliged the communities and lords to negotiate. The religious wars allowed peasants and lords to learn political practice. This is evidenced in the Noailles exchange of correspondence which is the main source of this paper.
