| Summary, etc. | Étienne Bézout, as member of the Royal Academy of sciences of Paris, was assigned the task of reviewing various works and books received by this institution. The aim of this article is to examine his responsibility for the Navy, before and after 1764, which is the year of Bézout’s nomination as “examiner of the guards of the navy.” Each year he had to visit the ports of Brest, Rochefort and Toulon to examine the guards. This qualified him as expert in sailing. Around the same time, Étienne Bézout became a member of the Naval Academy of Brest, that is in 1769. I shall survey his work within this academy and his work as expert, especially his participation in an academic controversy : Blondeau versus Bouguer/Lacaille concerning a navigation book. Finally, I shall study his 1769 Traité de navigation and compare it to Bouguer’s book on the topic. |
