Summary, etc. Dispossession can be the ultimate stage in land access insecurity. Indeed, the lands of farmers who were settled as part of land reforms aiming to be egalitarian are now coveted for other uses. In this article, we analyze the pressures, in particular the environmental efforts, they are subjected to by using A. Sen’s notion of capability. We show that institutional structures inherited from colonialism live on in French overseas departments (in particular in La Reunion) and foster—sugar cane—farmers’ incapability, as they eventually give up their lands.
