Summary, etc. | Some parents suffer from an accumulation of difficulties. They can be insecure in their work or even be excluded from working, as well vulnerable within their family, as shown by child protection measures. To counter the risk of breakdown of social bonds, numerous interventions now put the emphasis on supporting parents, enhancing parental skills and recognising the place of parents. But, what lies behind the phrase ‘recognition’ and which forms does it take in the domain of interventions on parenting? The aim of this article is to present an inventory of the theories of recognition and to provide the initial results of a study of the various forms this recognition takes within a child protection institution. The corpus consists of 300 questionnaires completed by educators on the children attending the institution and of 15 semi-structured interviews with the children’s parents. This corpus questions the representations and practices of those involved and sheds light on the issues of social dignity and stigmatisation. Our results show a continued gap between the official position that encourages giving parents a place and practices that undermine their social recognition. |
