Summary, etc. | Nearly three centuries separate the Jeu de saint Nicolas written by Jehan Bodel (Arras, beginning of the thirteenth century) and the Myst?re de saint Martin by Andrieu de la Vigne (Burgundy, 1496). At first sight, nothing seems to link these two plays, the first showing a posthumous miracle by St Nicholas of Myra, the latter staging the life of the Bishop of Tours. Nevertheless, interesting similarities can be found by comparing the Jeu de saint Nicolas and that part of the Myst?re which focuses on St Martin's military youth. Both authors use in their plays a dual temporality, one at human level, the other at a supernatural one. Spatially, the texts are also split into two opposite worlds, a familiar here opposed to a fabulous other. Such similarities raise the question of whether Andrieu de la Vigne could have known and maybe used the famous play written by Jehan Bodel. |
