| Summary, etc. | The consequences of exposure to domestic violence are now better documented by research. They affect every sphere of the cognitive, emotional and social development of children and adolescents, right through to post-traumatic stress. A risk factor in development, the age at which children are subjected to domestic violence seems to increase their difficulties, particularly with regard to the attachment relationship. The aim of this article is to analyse, retrospectively, the representations of violence and parental attitudes of adults exposed to domestic violence in early childhood. The aim was also to determine whether attachment in adulthood was linked to early exposure to domestic violence. One hundred and fifteen people, eight men and one hundred and seven women (M = 36.9 years, E.T = 13.44) took part in the study. Two groups of participants were formed, one exposed to domestic violence in early childhood (between 0 and 3 years of age, N = 55) and one exposed later (between 4 and 14 years of age, N = 60). The participants completed an online survey consisting of several questionnaires. They completed the Children Perception of Interparental Conflict (CPIC, Cyr & Fortin, 2001), which captured their views on the intensity of the violence, their perception of the threat and the feeling of blame they had experienced during their childhood. Representations of parental care during childhood were measured using the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI, Mohr, Preisig, Fento and Ferrero, 1999). The Relationship Scale Questionnaire (RSQ, Guédeney, Fermanian and Bifulco, 2010) was completed to capture the attachment relationships they maintain in adulthood. Analyses of variance showed that early exposure to domestic violence had a significant effect only on feelings of blame. On the other hand, the duration of exposure to domestic violence was significantly related to the adult’s representations of paternal attitudes, particularly those relating to care, and also to feelings of blame. In our sample, the length of exposure to domestic violence appears to be an additional factor of vulnerability to domestic violence. Early childhood is a key period for detecting and curbing future and lasting difficulties in the adaptation of children exposed to violence. |

Elles affectent toutes les sphères du développement, cognitif, affectif, social de l’enfant et de l’adolescent, jusqu’au stress post-traumatique. Facteur de risque dans le développement, l’âge auquel les enfants ont subi le contexte de violences conjugales semble augmenter leurs difficultés, particulièrement au regard de la relation d’attachement. L’objectif de cet article est d’analyser, de manière rétrospective, les représentations de la violence et des attitudes parentales d’adultes exposés aux violences conjugales durant leur petite enfance. Il s’agit également d’appréhender si l’attachement à l’âge adulte est lié à l’exposition précoce aux violences conjugales. Cent quinze personnes, huit hommes et cent sept femmes (M = 36,9 ans, E.T = 13,44) ont participé à l’étude. Deux groupes de participants ont été constitués, un groupe exposé aux violences conjugales durant la petite enfance (entre 0 et 3 ans, N = 55) et un groupe exposé plus tardivement (entre 4 et 14 ans, N = 60). Les participants ont répondu à une enquête en ligne composée de plusieurs questionnaires. Ils ont renseigné le Children Perception of Interparental Conflict (CPIC, Cyr & Fortin, 2001) permettant d’appréhender leur point de vue sur l’intensité de la violence, la perception de la menace et le sentiment de blâme qu’ils ont ressentis durant leur enfance. Les représentations relatives aux soins parentaux durant l’enfance ont été mesurées à l’aide du Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI, Mohr, Preisig, Fento et Ferrero, 1999). Le Questionnaire des échelles de Relation (RSQ, Guédeney, Fermanian et Bifulco, 2010) a été renseigné afin de saisir les relations d’attachement qu’ils entretiennent à l’âge adulte. Des analyses de variance ont mis en évidence que la précocité de l’exposition aux violences conjugales n’a d’effet significatif que sur le sentiment de blâme. En revanche, la durée de l’exposition aux violences conjugales est significativement liée aux représentations des attitudes paternelles que possède l’adulte, notamment celles relatives au soin, et également au sentiment de blâme. La durée de l’exposition aux violences conjugales apparaît, dans notre échantillon, comme un facteur de vulnérabilité supplémentaire au contexte de violences conjugales. La période de la petite enfance est charnière pour détecter et endiguer les difficultés d’adaptation future et durable des enfants exposés. |
