| Summary, etc. | RésuméMinistre de l’Éducation nationale de 1997 à 2000, Claude Allègre a lancé plusieurs réformes importantes avec un succès inégal. Cet article décrit sa politique et les raisons pour lesquelles elle a suscité une opposition croissante, qui débouche sur des grèves et des manifestations de rue si fortes que le Premier ministre, son ami Lionel Jospin, fut forcé de le renvoyer. Ce fut le premier ministre congédié sous la pression de la rue. Il mobilisa contre lui non seulement les enseignants, mais aussi les élèves et les parents. Les syndicats enseignants étaient divisés, et certains approuvaient ses projets, mais la vague de protestation était si puissante qu’il s’y joignirent. L’analyse des formes de mobilisation contre Claude Allègre montre comment le refus de la mondialisation néolibérale et de la marchandisation du savoir a été renforcé par un nouveau processus de production de l’opinion publique et d’appel aux manifestations par Internet. La mobilisation contre Claude Allègre apparaît ainsi comme l’émergence du mouvement qui, cinq ans plus tard, abat la Constitution européenne. |

| Summary, etc. | Minister of Education from 1997 to 2000, Claude Allègre launched several important reforms with uneven results. This article describes his policy and the reasons it led to growing opposition, ending with strikes and street demonstrations that were so serious that the Prime minister, his friend Lionel Jospin, was forced to dismiss him. He was the first minister let go by street pressure. Not only teachers, but students and parents as well were united against him. Teachers’ unions were divided, and some praised his proposals, but the tide of protest was so powerful that they finally joined it. Analyzing the forms of that mobilisation against Claude Allègre, this article shows how the rejection of neoliberal globalization and the merchandizing of knowledge has been helped by a new process of public opinion making and call for demonstrations by Internet. Hence, the mobilization against Claude Allègre would appear to be the beginning of the movement which, five years later, shot down the European Constitution. |
