| Summary, etc. | Les manières de punir sont des « concentrés » de culture, parfois archaïques, à manipuler avec une grande prudence critique, la peine étant toujours vécue comme une absurdité. Si l’on ne fait que punir, sans se sentir tenu par l’obligation de rendre acceptable le sens de la peine, le déni de responsabilité se généralise. À partir de ce constat, Olivier Abel* suggère que la peine prend du temps, comme s’il y avait un travail de la peine, du côté de la victime, qui attend réparation ; du côté du détenu aussi, le travail de la peine peut produire un sens qui n’est pas donné au départ, manière pour lui de se réinterpréter lui-même, à condition toutefois que ce temps fasse une différence. |

| Summary, etc. | The different ways of punishment are nothing but “concentrates” of culture – archaic sometimes – that must be used very carefully and with high critical concern because a sentence is always felt as nonsensical. If judges sentence people without feeling mandatory to explain the sentence so that it can be accepted, the denial of responsibility comes into general use. Acknowledging this as a starting point of his reflection, Olivier Abel suggests that the sentence itself “takes time” as though some work had to be accomplished on the side of the victim waiting for the offence to be made up for as well as on the side of the prisoner trying to make sense of it and leading him to some new interpretation of his self, provided that this time makes a difference. |
