| Summary, etc. | RésuméCet article traite de la relation des « adolescents des cités » à leur quartier. Il souligne l’importance sociologique de la notion de territoire en ce qu’elle constitue une dimension essentielle des identités. L’auteur montre l’existence d’une logique d’attachement et d’identification au quartier, ce dernier constituant pour ces adolescents un lieu de sociabilité et de solidarité. Cette forme d’inscription territoriale de l’identité ne débouche pas nécessairement sur la délinquance et n’implique pas non plus l’existence de prétendues bandes. On peut néanmoins constater des fonctionnements de groupe et des caractéristiques comportementales liées au territoire et reposant sur un système cohérent de comportements et de langage. Le quartier devient notamment un enjeu des rapports entre les filles et les garçons, l’espace public fonctionnant par une séparation des groupes selon l’âge et des rôles sexués. Cet article montre ensuite que le rapport des adolescents à leur quartier est dominé par une contradiction, car le quartier est à la fois objet de protection et de mobilisation, mais aussi le lieu de la ségrégation et de la stigmatisation. |

| Summary, etc. | This article deals with the relationship between youths from ghetto-housing estates and their neighbourhood. It emphasizes the sociological importance of the notion of territory in so far as it represents a primary dimension for their own identity. The author shows that there is a logical link and true identification with the neighbourhood, which appears as a place of sociability and solidarity for these youngsters. This specific binding between identity and territorial notion does not necessarily result in delinquency, it does not either imply the existence of gangs. Nevertheless, existing groups and behavioural features, connected to the territory and based on a coherent behaviour pattern and linguistic system, can be reported. In the relationship between boys and girls, the neighbourhood may be at stake as the public area is split into groups based on the age and the sexual roles. This article, then, demonstrates that the relationship between young people and their neighbourhood is dominated by a contradiction : this neighbourhood is at the same time a subject of protection and mobilisation but also a place where segregation and stigmatisation can be found. |
