Les procédés de fabrication ont beaucoup évolué ainsi que l’organisation du travail, aux Pays-Bas, en France, en Angleterre. Cette industrie est d’ailleurs celle choisie par Adam Smith pour relier la spécialisation des ouvriers par tâches à leur productivité.
