| Summary, etc. | RésuméS’interroger sur les rapports deux fois séculaires qu’entretiennent la Science, surtout mathématique, et la Science économique amène au constat que ces relations apparaissent parfois comme presque consubstantielles, parfois comme conflictuelles. Cette dialectique constante a laissé inachevée la tâche de définir, sans contestation de nature idéologique, l’objet même de la discipline. Un souci légitime de rigueur, une volonté de rendre prédictif le discours économique a conduit néanmoins à en dégager des énoncés qui, par leur caractère hypothético-déductif, se veulent aussi solidement établis que des lois physiques. La finance, qui imprègne aujourd’hui l’économie dans son ensemble et qui présente une intrication originelle forte avec les mathématiques, a logiquement entraîné un usage immodéré et décevant de sa formalisation. | Summary, etc. | What is the meaning of the word science in the term “Economic sciences”?The two-century old relations between Science-above all mathematics- and Economics lead to the conclusion that they are sometimes almost consubstantial, sometimes contradictory. The consequence is that the very definition of Economics remains partly ideological. To allow for a rigorous approach and a predictive power of economic statements, hypothetic-deductive rationale has been used, aiming to the establishment of almost physical laws. Finance, which sticks to the whole Economics today and which originally posed as a scientific discipline, has logically led to a too large and somehow deceitful use of formalism.
