| Summary, etc. |

| Summary, etc. | Cain and Abel. Hating One’s Brother Expressed in its own specific Biblical language, the story of Cain and Abel allows us to reflect on the question of evil as illustrated by the founding myth of original fratricide. If we follow the story step by step, we bear witness to a steadily unfolding tragedy in which we are already familiar with the main events. What is interesting for the psychoanalyst here, who has necessarily already read Totem and Taboo, is where what the Bible has to say about the story differs in its portrayal of brotherly hatred and murder and the cultural progress that is born from this. In this article we will see how murdering the brother seems to have been necessary for the individual, and all mankind, to recognise the brother as Other and thus to be able to recognise the bond with this Other as a ‘fellow brother of the human condition.’Yet the Bible also shows us how this ‘cultural progress’also has a darker side to it – Cain becomes a subject, builds a town and establishes the bases for life in society from out of his own destructiveness and over Abel’s dead body... |
