| Summary, etc. | L’entrée de l’Église catholique dans une nouvelle étape de son histoire, accompagnée par le concile Vatican II mettait la théologie au défi. Il ne s’agissait pas simplement de répéter plus amplement ce qui était acquis, mais d’offrir de manière vivante le patrimoine spirituel dont l’Église était héritière. Jean XXIII en était conscient et le concile a tenté, surtout dans la Constitution Gaudium et spes, de surmonter l’écart qui s’était creusé entre l’Église et le monde moderne. Claude Geffré, passant à l’Institut catholique de Paris, a vivement ressenti cet écart. À la suite de ses confrères dominicains, en particulier de Marie-Dominique Chenu, son projet de théologie herméneutique, défini comme interprétation pour le monde moderne des paroles de foi, se présentait comme une contribution pour sortir la théologie du ghetto dans lequel elle était enfermée. Plus récemment, le pape François reprend, en l’actualisant, cette proposition. S’adossant à son tour sur le geste de Vatican II, il propose que la théologie soit une herméneutique évangélique de la vie, du monde et des hommes. |

| Summary, etc. | The Catholic Church’s entry into a new phase of its history, accompanied by the Second Vatican Council, put theology to the test. What mattered wasn’t simply a more ample repetition of what was secure, but to give out in a living way the spiritual patrimony the Church had inherited. John XXIII was aware of this, and the Council, especially in its constitution Gaudium et Spes, tried to bridge the gap that had opened between the Church and the modern world. Claude Geffré deeply experienced that gap on arriving at the Institut Catholique de Paris. Following the path of his Dominican brothers, especially of Marie-Dominique Chenu, his project for a hermeneutical theology, defined as an interpretation of the words of faith for the modern world, displayed a contribution to moving theology out of the ghetto it had locked itself into. More recently, Pope Francis takes up this project and brings it up to date. He too, shored up by the actions of Vatican II, proposes that theology be a gospel-based hermeneutics of life, of the world and of humanity. |
