Cela a conduit des observateurs tels que Banfield ou Putnam à qualifier le Mezzogiorno respectivement d’« arriéré » ou d’« incivique ». Cependant, le sens remarquable de l’hospitalité dont font preuve les Méridionaux, notamment à l’égard des migrants, n’est-il pas justement l’indice d’une profonde civicness qui leur est refusée ? En sorte que nous demanderons si les sociétés que l’on dit ouvertes n’ont pas quelque chose à apprendre du sud de l’Italie et si cet enseignement ne réside pas dans un lien occulté entre cette disposition à l’hospitalité et la force des traditions dépréciées. |

| Summary, etc. | In the South of Italy, family traditions which interfere with the economic and technical modernity are still alive. For this reason, analysts like Banfield or Putnam have characterized the Mezzogiorno respectively as “backward” or “uncivic.” However, is the great sense of hospitality which distinguishes Southerners, particulary towards migrants, not a sign of the deep “civicness” which they are denied? This piece examines what so-called open societies have to learn about Southern Italy and how this this sense of hospitality relates to the force of depreciated traditions. |
