| Summary, etc. | La manufacture de De Melter et Werniers a produit des tapisseries à Lille de 1688 à 1778 à l’initiative de trois entrepreneurs audacieux : le fondateur Jean de Melter, originaire de Bruxelles, qui a transmis sa fabrique à son gendre Guillaume Werniers ; puis Catherine Ghuys, la seconde femme et veuve de Guillaume Werniers, qui a assuré la direction de l’entreprise pendant quarante ans. La manufacture a connu la célébrité grâce à une production spécifique, recherchée par une riche clientèle principalement française : des tapisseries montrant des fêtes villageoises dans le goût de David Teniers, reconnaissables à leur dessin et à leur coloris vif. Elle a aussi répondu à la demande institutionnelle en livrant des tapisseries représentant des sujets religieux, des portraits et des armoiries, remarquables par la qualité du dessin et de l’étoffe. En introduction aux actes de la journée d’étude tenue à Lille le 1er avril 2025, cette contribution propose un état des connaissances et des pistes de recherche sur la manufacture Werniers et l’industrie de la tapisserie à Lille et dans le nord de la France. |

| Summary, etc. | The De Melter and Werniers factory produced tapestries in Lille from 1688 to 1778 on the initiative of three daring entrepreneurs: the founder Jean de Melter, originally from Brussels, who passed on his factory to his son-in-law Guillaume Werniers; then Catherine Ghuys, Guillaume Werniers’ second wife and widow, who ran the company for forty years. The factory became famous thanks to a specific product sought after by a wealthy, mainly French clientele: tapestries depicting village festivals in the style of David Teniers, recognisable by their design and bright colours. It also responded to institutional demand by delivering tapestries depicting religious subjects, portraits and coats of arms, remarkable for the quality of their design and fabric. As an introduction to the proceedings of the study day held in Lille on 1st April 2025, this paper provides an overview of current knowledge and avenues for research on the Werniers factory and the tapestry industry in Lille and northern France. |
