| Summary, etc. | L’histoire des femmes tapissières a longtemps été ignorée. Si les entrepreneures sont mentionnées, c’est de manière succincte. Comme les artisanes et artistes femmes d’autrefois, elles sont restées dans l’anonymat, à quelques exceptions près, même si les règlements des corporations autorisaient les veuves à diriger l’atelier que leur mari conduisait de son vivant, et à tenir boutique. L’exemple de Catherine Ghuys, veuve de Guillaume Werniers, est un des plus connus. À la mort de son mari, elle a pris la direction de la manufacture et l’a assurée pendant quarante ans, jusqu’à sa propre mort en 1778. Dans l’histoire de la tapisserie, elle compte parmi les rares femmes à avoir dirigé une fabrique pendant une aussi longue période. Ce texte vise à mieux cerner son activité de directrice de fabrique, de la resituer dans une histoire des femmes du secteur pré-industriel. |

| Summary, etc. | The history of women tapestry makers has long been ignored. Female entrepreneurs are barely mentioned in the literature, and then only in brief terms. Like most craftswomen and female artists of the past they remain anonymous, with a few exceptions, even though guild regulations authorized widows to run their husband’s workshops after their death, just as they could run a shop. The case of Catherine Ghuys, Guillaume Werniers’widow, is one of the best-known examples of this. After her husband’s death, she took over the management of his manufactory and ran it for forty years, until her own death in 1778. In the history of tapestry, she is one of the few women to have run a manufactory for such a long time. The aim of this text is to gain a better understanding of her work as tapestry manufactory manager, and to replace her in a wider history of women within the pre-industrial world. |
