| Summary, etc. | La formation des ingénieurs de l’École des Mines de Paris, au xixe s., comportait la réalisation de voyages, pendant lesquels les élèves visitaient des établissements industriels, dont ils produisaient un compte rendu sous forme d’un Journal de voyage. Ces documents, incluant les observations, mais également des commentaires et propositions d’amélioration, témoignent ainsi non seulement de l’état des productions techniques à cette époque, mais également du regard que portaient sur le sujet ces ingénieurs en formation. Du premier en 1826, jusqu’à la disruption causée par la guerre de 1870, 315 Journaux ont été conservés, dont un quart recèle des descriptions d’établissements de production de terre cuite architecturale. Ceux-ci révèlent à la fois un paysage industriel changeant, avec une mécanisation très progressive, une affirmation graduelle du principal pôle de référence en la matière comme étant la ville belge d’Andenne, et une évolution de sa conception par les élèves. Ces derniers naviguaient, au cours de leurs observations et de leurs descriptions, entre difficultés dans la compréhension de la pratique « traditionnelle », importance des fours en meule, apparition attendue et souvent déçue des machines. Ils nous fournissent ainsi une source de premier ordre, quoique particulière par sa nature, pour l’étude de cette production omniprésente, en particulier dans le nord de la France. |

| Summary, etc. | Engineers training at the Paris Mines School in the 19th century included summer trips, during which students visited industrial establishments, and produced a Travel journal as report. These documents, including observations, but also comments and suggestions for improvement, testify not only to the state of technical production at that time, but also to the view these engineers in training had on the subject. From the first one in 1826, until the disruption caused by the 1870 war, 315 Journals are preserved, a quarter of which contain descriptions of architectural terracotta producing factories. This reveals both a changing industrial landscape, with very progressive mechanization, a gradual affirmation of the Belgian town of Andenne as the main reference center in the matter, and an evolution of its conception by the students. These navigated, through their observations and descriptions, between difficulties in understanding “traditional” practice, importance of open kilns, and the expected and often disappointed use of machines. They thus provide us with a first-rate source, although particular in its nature, for the study of this omnipresent production, particularly in the north of France. |
