| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | The case of Thomas Riboud shows the complex relations of state belonging during the 1780s of a mid-ranking officer and subdelegate, between State of offices and State of commissaires. The costs of his incorporation, partly undergone, appear multiple. They are financial, with a judicial office estimated to be poorly remunerated and existential, with a situation of overgang between his ordinary practice of royal justice as a king’s prosecutor of the bailiwick-présidial of Bourg-en-Bresse and his ideal conception of a man of the Enlightenment. The misalignment results, on the one hand, in literate practices in the form of distancing and creative outlet in relation to a potentially split habitus, and on the other hand, in a definitive exit from the institution. Conversely, the concomitant exercise of subdelegation, synonymous with integration into the administrative State, allows for concordance and coherence between representations, expectations and practices. Being a local assistant of the intendant offers several advantages: economic, by providing substantial resources; social, by strengthening local notability; political, by giving agency at the local level. The chosen disincorporation of the judicial corps and the sustainable and interested investment in the territorial administration represent two converging dimensions of a path that favors corporate disaffiliation and adhesion to new form of the government. |
