| Summary, etc. | RésuméCet article décrit quelques-unes des convergences possibles entre l’ethnographie et la psychanalyse, dans une étude d’intervention précoce. Dans la mesure où la psychanalyse et l’ethnographie insistent sur la validité des relations interpersonnelles comme moyen de connaissance, il existe un potentiel important de convergence, tant sur le plan théorique que sur celui des méthodes. Comme la psychanalyse, l’ethographie donne du prix à l’interprétation des mouvements émergents au cours de la rencontre avec l’autre, plus que dans le développement, à l’avance, d’expériences mises en place pour le développement d’hypothèses. Cette insistance peut mettre l’ethographie en difficulté par rapport au paradigme hypothético-déductif qui est dominant dans tant de sciences sociales, mais il permet l’émergence de trouvailles surprenantes, du fait de l’immersion de l’ethnologue dans la culture locale. La valeur de l’approche ethographique est illustrée ici par la façon dont elle a permis de comprendre l’impact d’un programme de type Montessori sur les familles. |

| Summary, etc. | This paper describes some possible convergence between ethnographic and psychoanalytic methods in a study of early childhood intervention. Insofar as both psychoanalysis and ethnography emphasize the value of personal relationships as ways of knowing, there is enormous potential for a convergence of both theory and method. Like psychoanalysis, ethnography puts a premium on the interpretation of emerging dynamics in our encounters with others rather than the development, in advance, of experiments designed to test hypotheses. This emphasis can put ethnographers at odds with the hypothetical-deductive paradigm that is dominant in so many social sciences, but it is designed to allow for surprising findings to emerge by virtue of the ethnographer’s immersion in local cultural contexts. The value of an ethnographic approach is illustrated here by examining some of the contributions that an ethnographic study has made to our evolving understanding of how a Montessori early childhood program affects families. |
