Summary, etc. | Eighty percent of Maghrebians living in Canada are based in Montreal. Gradually arrived in this province from the 1990s, most of the North Africans came as skilled workers and had a long and difficult career. Their professional integration into the Quebec job market often led them to the path of deskilling, whereas they were selected mainly because of their diplomas and their professional experience. There are many barriers to their professional integration, such as non-recognition of their diplomas, lack of knowledge of English and lack of professional networks upon arrival. The first cohorts of Maghrebians are gradually retiring, a period that is increasingly necessary to plan in order to prevent major problems in the future. The purpose of this article is to understand the influence of employment trajectories of Montreal’s Maghrebians on their retirement planning behaviors. The results presented in this article are based on a field survey conducted in 2016. 22 life stories and two discussion groups were conducted with Moroccans, Algerians and Tunisians who are over 50 years old and living in Montreal. From this study emerged a typology of planners based on career paths, which are shared between financiers, people who struggled, permanent and autonomous. |
