Summary, etc. This article focuses on subjective conceptions of “ageing well” among the over-40s in France. We attempt to uncover the factors that explain these conceptions, paying particular attention to the role of socio-economic status. To do so, we analyze data from an original quantitative survey conducted in 2016 among approximately 1,730 customers of a not-for-profit insurance company ( “mutuelle”). On the whole, ageing well means above all being satisfied with one’s health, financial situation, family life, and couple. Living conditions have an effect on conceptions of ageing well. For higher socio-economic status individuals, ageing well is more often synonymous with good health, sociability, and plans, whereas for more disadvantaged persons, the emphasis is more on satisfaction with housing and its environment, which could refer to more often unsatisfactory living conditions and to a “choice of necessity”.
