Summary, etc. In British moral sense theories of the eighteenth century, the most frequently discussed feeling was sympathy, the ability to feel with and for other people. Crucial to the argument was the dark underbelly of any fellow-feeling: indifference, stupidity, apathy, and other insensibilities that kept individuals apart. Different kinds of ‘want of feeling,’ however, were accorded different moral valence. From indifference to anaesthesia, this article traces how concepts of embodied unfeelingness that threatened social cohesion, could be put to good use in such cases as making surgery painless.
