| Summary, etc. | Objectives: With the advent of cell phones and the widespread use of the internet, the sending of nude photographs (or “nudes”) is among a number of new sexual practices that raise questions. This article sheds light on the exchange of photos and videos, specifically among young people aged thirteen to twenty-five living in France and French-speaking Belgium. Methods: A convenience sample consisting of 10,700 participants, including 7,545 women and 3,155 men, was used. Recruitment was mainly carried out online via social networks. Results: Sending nudes of oneself appears to be a widespread practice among young people, and their assessment of this practice is mostly positive. This type of exchange is integrated into their sexuality; 74.5 percent of those surveyed have sent nudes. This is largely done on their own initiative (82.76 percent) or following a request from their partner (64.07 percent). One notable evolution concerns the role of couples in these exchanges; primary sharing of nudes still plays an important role in relationships, but it now also occupies an important place outside of romantic relationships. A total of 86.8 percent of participants have sent nudes outside of relationships. The majority of the people photographed do not want their nudes to be transferred to others. Despite this, young victims rarely seek help from adults when this occurs. Even fewer seek help from the police; only 7.95 percent have filed a police report. |
