| Summary, etc. | En 2014, Masaki Tomonaga, primatologue au Primate Research Institute (PRI) de l’université de Kyoto, a entrepris, sous la direction de Tetsuro Matsuzawa, de comparer les capacités visuelles des chevaux à celles des chimpanzés. Carlos Pereira et Sophie Nicod ont collaboré à cette étude dans le cadre de l’axe du programme COW qui concernait la communication. L’objectif de l’étude était de vérifier cette reconnaissance visuelle sur un écran d’ordinateur. Les théories sous-jacentes à ce type d’expérimentation sont celles du conditionnement opérant. En marge de l’expérimentation et à titre d’hypothèse préliminaire, nous avons proposé de penser que l’activité des chevaux dans ce cadre expérimental relevait autant du travail que du conditionnement. Pour tester cette hypothèse, Sophie Nicod a observé les chevaux dans leurs rapports quotidiens à l’ordinateur et a noté les écarts entre les prescriptions et ce que faisaient effectivement les chevaux lors de dysfonctionnements de l’ordinateur. Ces résultats préliminaires laissent penser que les théories du travail permettent de comprendre ce que font les animaux au laboratoire d’une manière bien plus convaincante que les théories du conditionnement. |

| Summary, etc. | In 2014, under the direction of Tetsuro Matsuzawa, Masaki Tomonaga, primatologist at the Primate Research Institute (PRI) of the University of Kyoto, conducted an experiment about the visual discrimination abilities of horses. Carlos Pereira and Sophie Nicod collaborated in this experiment within the framework of the ANR COW program. The aim of the experiment was to assess the visual abilities of horses on a computer screen. The main theory that supports this type of experiments is the operant conditioning. As preliminary hypothesis, on the margins of this experiment, we proposed that the horse’s activities in this experiment were as much about work as about conditioning. To test this hypothesis, Sophie Nicod observed the daily behavior of horses with computer. She noted the differences between what was prescribed by the procedures and what horses actually did. The preliminary results suggest that theories of work are more relevant to understanding what animals do in laboratories than conditioning theories. |
