| Summary, etc. | Le concept de « male gaze », proposé par Laura Mulvey en 1975, bénéficie aujourd’hui d’une actualité forte. Les usages contemporains du concept tendent cependant à évacuer ses fondements psychanalytiques aussi bien que la thèse centrale sur laquelle il repose : l’idée d’une subjectivation des publics par l’expérience cinématographique. À partir de l’étude de deux controverses survenues entre 1974 et 1980 autour des thèses de Mulvey, cet article montre que ces points ont pourtant été l’objet d’intenses conflits théoriques et politiques. Ils soulignent l’inadéquation du concept pour appréhender le processus de réception mais aussi l’incompatibilité radicale entre les cultural studies et la tradition depuis laquelle opère Mulvey. |

| Summary, etc. | The concept of the ‘male gaze’ proposed by Laura Mulvey in 1975 is a key notion in film and media studies. Contemporary uses of the concept, however, tend to leave out both its psychoanalytical foundations and its central thesis, that of the subjectivation of the spectator through cinematographic experience. Through analysis of two controversies that arose between 1974 and 1980 surrounding Mulvey’s thesis, this article shows how these dimensions nonetheless became the focal points of intense theoretical and political conflict. We argue that the concept of the male gaze is an inadequate one for the study of the reception process, and we show the radical incompatibility between cultural studies and the tradition within which Mulvey operates. |
