| Summary, etc. | Longtemps limités par la rareté des données, les travaux sur l’inégalité des chances et la mobilité intergénérationnelle basés sur les revenus connaissent un essor important. Cet article vise à illustrer l’intérêt de ces travaux, et des questions qu’ils posent, pour les chercheurs du champ de l’éducation. À partir des concepts développés par la littérature sur les inégalités d’opportunité, nous mettons en évidence le lien statistique fort entre revenu espéré et origine sociale, qui s’explique en grande partie par des écarts de niveau et de spécialité du diplôme. Nous mettons en évidence également l’hétérogénéité très forte des revenus à origine sociale donnée, qui s’explique dans une moindre mesure par le diplôme. Dans une deuxième partie, nous présentons la mesure de la mobilité intergénérationnelle basée sur la régression du revenu des enfants sur celui des parents. Au niveau international, le niveau de mobilité intergénérationnelle est fortement corrélé aux variables éducatives. Nous illustrons ce phénomène à partir des enquêtes PISA 2018. La France semble caractérisée par une inertie des revenus plus élevée que la moyenne, même si de nombreuses incertitudes persistent sur l’ampleur de cette inertie et son origine. Nous discutons l’intérêt de disposer à l’avenir de données de panel associant carrière éducative, revenus des parents et des enfants, pour mieux apprécier ce phénomène. |

| Summary, etc. | Studies on inequality of opportunity and intergenerational mobility based on income are flourishing, due to new data. The aim of this paper is to present the results of this literature and the question that it raises, to researchers in the field of education. Building on the concepts developed by the literature on unequal opportunities, we emphasize the strong statistical relationship between expected income and social background – which is mediated by difference of diplomas. We emphasize as well the heterogeneity of income at a given social background – which is explained by diplomas to a lesser extent. In a second part, we present the measure of intergenerational mobility based on children’s and parents’ incomes. At international level, intergenerational mobility measures are strongly correlated with educational variables. We illustrate this phenomenon with the data of PISA 2018. France is characterized by a higher level of income inertia than average, but many uncertainties remain on the level of this inertia and its origin. We then discuss how panels that combine educational careers, parental income and children income can improve our understanding of the specificity of France. |
