| Summary, etc. | RésuméÉmanation d’une formidable concentration d’hommes et d’activités, l’urbanité transcende les sociétés humaines. Autour de ce sujet, économistes et géographes ne se sont rapprochés que depuis une trentaine d’années, en dépit d’ancêtres communs. Ce sont les conditions actuelles de ce rapprochement qui m’ont intéressé. Pour un économiste, raisonnant à l’équilibre, une parcelle sera définie ex-post par l’activité de l’agent qui s’y est localisé. En analyse spatiale, un lieu sera plutôt caractérisé par la façon dont les activités qui sont localisés en son sein influent sur ses relations avec les autres espaces de la ville. D’une certaine manière, lorsque les activités sont distribuées à la surface de l’espace le travail de l’économiste est terminé, celui du géographe commence : caractériser l’espace considéré afin de déterminer ses fonctions dans l’organisation de la ville et ses relations avec les autres lieux. Il semble ainsi que la ligne séparant une science spatiale holiste ou individualiste-méthodologique passe entre géographie et économie, cristallisant les débats autour de la notion de lieu. |

| Summary, etc. | In all societies, the enormous densities of people and activities in cities imbue such concentrations with urban characteristics. The development of urban studies in almost all the social sciences therefore comes as no surprise. This paper focuses on the way geographers and economists approach this phenomenon. Strikingly, microeconomists view the city as a space rather than as something within a space. An explanation can be sought in the way theoretical space is built. Whereas an economist seeks equilibrium, a geographer, as a spatial analyst, is more concerned with the way places interact. An economic analysis of places describes a set of activities without taking account of places. A geographical analysis highlights the qualities of a place that produce something new. One could say that the economist’s job is done when the activities have been distributed on the surface of the space, which is where the geographer’s begins: characterising the space to determine its functions in the organisation of the city and its relationships with other places. Spatial analysis thus seems to contain both holistic and individualistic conceptions of society. |
