| Summary, etc. | RésuméÀ partir d’une relecture de textes géographiques publiés entre les années 1750 et les années 1820, cet article analyse la méfiance exprimée par les géographes de cabinet vis-à-vis de l’expérience de terrain et étudie les conséquences de cette disjonction entre le temps de l’observation et le temps de la description sur la production du savoir géographique. Alors qu’à cette période les naturalistes ont dépassé le stade de la collecte pour s’ouvrir à une intelligibilité nouvelle de l’espace, les géographes se contentent d’une simple nomenclature des lieux et considèrent toujours la géographie comme relevant de la culture de curiosité. |

| Summary, etc. | By taking a fresh look at geographical texts published between the 1750s and the 1820s, this article analyses sedentary geographers’ wariness of field experience. It also studies the consequences on the production of geographical knowledge of the discontinuity between time of observation and time of description. Whereas, during the period under review, naturalists went beyond collection and opened their minds to a new understanding of space, geographers contented themselves with establishing nomenclatures of places and considered geography as an amateur domain. |
