| Summary, etc. | AVANT-PROPOS Le Mali est accessible des pays voisins par de nombreux réseaux et infrastructures : routes, voie ferrée, voie fluviale, voie aérienne1. Dans l’Ouest du pays, la région de Kayes est frontalière du Sénégal et constitue la porte d’entrée pour tout ce qui vient de Dakar. En tant que capitale du Haut Soudan français, la ville de Kayes a d’ailleurs joué un rôle majeur dans les liaisons entre la colonie du Sénégal et l’intérieur du Soudan. La ville reste habitée par une forte proportion de population aux noms à consonance sénégalaise, le chemin de fer ayant longtemps servi de trait d’union entre Kayes et le Sénégal voisin. Pourtant, Kayes est aujourd’hui malienne et doit compter avec la capitale, Bamako. Dans ce contexte, la route reliant Kayes au Sénégal constitue un symbole très révélateur de l’attrait et de la méfiance que suscite au Mali le Sénégal voisin. |

| Summary, etc. | Nation-building before regional integration? Mali is accessible from the neighbouring countries by numerous networks and infrastructures: road, rail, river, and air. In the west of the country, the Kayes region borders on Senegal and is the entry point for everything that comes from Dakar. As the capital of French Sudan, the town of Kayes was once a key link between the colony of Senegal and the interior of Sudan. A large proportion of the town’s population today have Senegalese surnames and the railway has long been a link between Kayes and Senegal. However, Kayes is now part of Mali and must deal with the capital, Bamako. In this context, the road linking Kayes to Senegal is a highly revealing symbol of Mali’s attraction to and suspicion of Senegal. |
