He demonstrates that the works of the Ancients are exemplary because they reveal an originality that modern artists are also likely to fulfil. |

| Summary, etc. | In Anlehnung an Winckelmann geht Lavater von der anthropologischen Überlegenheit des antiken Menschen aus und stellt die These auf, dass der zeitgenössische Künstler diese Vollkommenheit nicht erreichen kann. Wielands Antwort richtet sich gegen diese Verabsolutierung der kanonischen Norm. Er zeigt, dass die Ideale der Griechen als Anhaltspunkt fungieren. Die Werke der Alten sind exemplarisch, weil sie von einer Originalität zeugen, die dem modernen Künstler auch zugänglich ist. |
