| Summary, etc. | Quelle est la portée du “financial gap” dont ont été victimes les PME en matière d’endettement bancaire ? Pour tenter de répondre à cette question, l’article étudie l’importance et la nature des crédits bancaires dans le financement des entreprises clientes du Crédit National pendant les années 1920.Il montre que si la décennie étudiée est bien une période de transition partielle entre un financement par les banques régionales et un financement par les nouveaux établissements para-publics créés au lendemain de la guerre, cette transition s’ est mal passée. Ceci s’explique par le fait que les nouveaux établissements para-publics ont subi les mêmes contraintes de financement et de gestion que les banques commerciales. |

| Summary, etc. | The banks and the financing of French small businesses in the 1920sIn order to know whether the French banking system was adequate and satisfactory in the provision of credits to small and medium-sized businesses, the paper studies the extent and the sources of the banking credits listed in the balance sheet of the firms that have asked for a loan from Crédit National in the 1920s.The paper shows that during the twenties, when new ‘public’ institutions were designed to replace partially local and regional banks, there was a lack of financial facilities for small and medium-sized enterprises. The reason is that public institutions experienced the same financial and managerial difficulties as commercial banks. |
